Jake Forster-Caskey's brace ensured Charlton came from behind to see off lowly Rochdale at The Valley.
Matthew Gillam had swept the visitors into an early lead before Forster-Caskey struck either side of the break to spare the promotion-chasing Addicks' blushes.
Ricky Holmes and Mark Marshall both had early half chances for the high-flying hosts.
But it was Rochdale who grabbed a shock lead in the 13th minute when Joseph Bunney fed Gillam, who fired past Ben Amos from eight yards.
It was almost 2-0 eight minutes later as Jay Dasilva was easily dispossessed by Matthew Done, whose low shot hit the post.
However, the hosts were back on terms 10 minutes before the break with Forster-Caskey ideally placed to convert from Dasilva's delivery.
Ahmed Kashi almost put the hosts in front six minutes after the interval with a low drive from outside the box which cannoned back off the post, while Amos made a fine stop to thwart Ian Henderson at the other end.
Charlton were in front for the first time on the hour when Marshall saw his angled effort spilled by visiting keeper Joshua Lillis into the path of a grateful Forster-Caskey, who made no mistake from close range.
Marshall, Josh Magennis and Karlan Ahearne-Grant all had chances to extend the home side's advantage
But Charlton had Amos to thank for a superb one-handed 86th minute save, somehow tipping Bradden Inman's volley over the bar.
