Gary Jones scored one goal and made another as Rochdale inflicted defeat on managerless Southampton.
Saints had plenty of chances but failed to take any of them and went behind when Jones led a break from inside his own half to set up Chris O'Grady.
Jason Puncheon should have equalised in the second half but managed to skim his shot over the bar from three yards.
Rochdale got their second when O'Grady set up Jones, who beat keeper Kelvin Davis from 25 yards.
