Brentford's push for promotion took a knock on Saturday after a disappointing loss at home to Rochdale.
The hosts began brightly but Rory McArdle headed Tom Kennedy's corner to give the visitors the lead.
Will Buckley added the second just before half-time after defender James Wilson lost his footing in the box.
On-loan striker Dean Bowditch nodded in Glenn Poole's cross to give Brentford hope and were then denied a penalty after Kennedy appeared to handle.
