Rochdale goalkeeper Matt Gilks was the hero as he saved a second-half penalty from Richard Walker to earn his side a point against Bristol Rovers.
Dale's deadline-day signing James Sharp fouled Lewis Haldane inside the area in the second half, but Walker's spot-kick only struck the legs of Gilks.
Haldane flashed an angled shot narrowly wide of the post in the first half.
