Cheltenham leap-frogged Rochdale to go within three points of the play-offs thanks to a Martin Devaney brace.
The winger opened the scoring midway through the first half when his 25-yard free kick swept past Matthew Gilks.
Rochdale dominated after the break as Leo Bertos and Scott Warner pressed on but they were unable to break through.
Devaney added a second from the spot with one minute remaining after Wayne Evans was shown the red card for a tackle on Damian Spencer.
