Luke Guttridge hit the right-hand post with a penalty kick as Cambridge wasted several good chances to beat Rochdale.
Cambridge won the spot kick after Wayne Evans brought down Danny Webb and the rebound went straight to Nathan Peat but goalkeeper Neil Edwards saved.
Edwards also saved Guttridge's early free-kick and dived to stop a Peat shot midway through the first half.
Rochdale might have snatched a late winner but skipper Gareth Griffiths headed wide from seven yards.
